People regard Formula 1 that at last came to India with mixed feelings. It is hyperbole to say it announced the arrival of India as a superpower in the international sporting arena. But after travelling on roads with potholes on a regular basis, the brand new, smooth fast tracks with queer-looking cars racing round them were a visual treat. That it is a rich man’s sport does not mean that we should not enjoy it. With cricket fatigue setting in, Formula 1 came as a refreshing distraction from the pressures of work. Though an expensive sport, it purportedly promotes tourism and hospitality industry. The government kept the proceeds from the mega-event tax-free revealing where its heart actually lies. As a competitive sport involving speed and risks, Formula 1 got the adrenaline flowing for spectators more than drivers. But Formula 1 is not exactly a matter of pride for a desperately poor country like India, whatever its apologists might say.
