Letters: Greece-proof

T N Ninan has likened our fate to that of Greece’s because of antediluvian and corruption-enabling laws that distort the economy, create crony capitalism and compel capital to flee the country (“Indira Gandhi redux,” July 30). However, I don’t think the situation is completely hopeless.

The examples of Bihar, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu indicate that our future will not be like that of Greece. These shining examples of good governance come from within our country. Ninan argues that politicians have tasted blood and will indulge in populist and corrupt measures. But the last major example of such a politician was Laloo Prasad and he was squarely rejected by the people. Citizens have seen through empty promises and I would like to believe that we are on the cusp of a change in governance. Greece is not our fate; what we await is a strong leader and party at the Centre.
