Before criticising the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre for telecasting live the Vijayadashmi address of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat, leaders of the Opposition Congress should remember what their own leader and former prime minister Indira Gandhi had done during the era when Doordarshan was the only channel on TV. Programmes during prime time highlighted her image while non-prime time shows depicted civic life in New Delhi. Regional languages were sidelined as television studios in other states simply relayed programmes from the Delhi Doordarshan studios.
