The article by Suveen K Sinha, (“Did he, did she?”, September 18), is a relevant reminder of the sexual harassment women face in workplace. The lack of complaints should certainly not be treated as proof of an improving working environment, for it may be due to lack of faith in the company’s sincerity towards addressing employee grievances or because of a fear of reprisal.
The need for an immediate legislation is evident. Meanwhile, there is much that organisations can do: regular secret surveys to learn about unreported cases; formalising the system in tune with the Supreme Court’s guidelines in the Vishakha case; protecting whistle blowers; addressing complaints quickly and properly ; senior management leading by example and the like.
