This is a historic moment in the US’ history and, after a long time, it has a president that the rest of the world seems to be in favour of as well. For a country that has, despite all its shine and polish, never allowed a coloured person in this job, it also speaks volumes for the change it has undergone.
Our politicians ought to watch Obama’s victory speech, and that of McCain as well. Both were a picture of grace. While McCain’s speech was dignified, it was Obama’s that displayed real statesmanship. He began by talking about how a vote for someone like him showed just great the US was — it was clear he was alluding to his not being white, but not once did he use the term. He spoke of the great sacrifice his rival McCain had made for the US and sought to embrace Republicans as well. He said that while a substantial portion of Americans had not voted for him, he would endeavour to be their President as well. When will our politicians so used to divisive politics learn to behave like this? This was a speech befitting a Nehru.
