It was an enriching experience to read “The wonder that was Hindu” (Lunch with BS, March 22). The discussion over the course of the lunch, based on Michel Danino’s marvellous research work, threw up new facts for readers like me. Though Danino’s erudite lectures on Indology enthral and amaze everybody, whether in Amrita University or IIT, Kanpur, it is difficult to agree with his view that “in India we have this problem that history is so poorly taught at school that it puts off students”. In my experience history teachers even in village schools and many good colleges bring the story to life through their dramatic voice delivery and modulations and amusing theatrics, which is no less entertaining and effective than modern audio-visual gadgets.
