The government's decision to call time on iconic watchmaker HMT after more than five decades has saddened many old-timers like me. The company's closure was on the cards after the "timekeepers to the nation" failed to keep ticking and racked up huge losses. The Bangalore-based company had many firsts to its credit - including the automatic day-date, Braille and quartz watches. One feels nostalgic remembering the times when HMT watches were all the rage. The watches made an eloquent style statement too. HMT clocks also dotted many a clock tower in the city and for those on the move this was a convenient way of keeping track of time.
