Letters: It's a long road to reform

The initiatives that the government has taken are not big-bang reforms, but something is better than nothing

Apropos your editorial “UPA-II wakes up” (September 17), I agree that the initiatives the government has taken are not big-bang reforms, but something is better than nothing. The FDI initiatives coupled with the increase in diesel prices and disinvestment in four PSUs have cheered up our economy and given India Inc a great boost. However, we should not be overjoyed. This is because the government lacks support from its own allies on this front, leave alone opposition parties. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement that if we have to go down we will go down fighting shows that he has made it a nuclear deal-like moment. On the pretext of being pro-people, the opposing political parties will ensure that they shout from the rooftops. So it is yet to be seen whether the government will pay the price of being economy-friendly or survive to see another day.
