Apropos the edit “Unhealthy dependence” (July 28), longer tenures blunt the two main goals of appointing new directors — infusion of creative ideas and objectivity. Familiarity with an organisation pre-empts change and a close relationship with top leaders could impinge on unbiased decision-making. However, it is debatable whether a nine-year ceiling on the tenure is appropriate. I think seven years would have been a better equilibrium point. In any case, the provision of a fixed term needs to be made compulsory.
