One important feature of the recent general elections to the Lok Sabha was that it converted the related campaign into a type that one finds in the US for electing the president. Although parties and manifestos were in play, it ultimately became a decision for the electorate to choose one of the two - Narendra Modi or Rahul Gandhi - for the post of the prime minister. This trend is likely to continue in the Assembly elections also. Two top leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Maharashtra - Gopinath Munde and Nitin Gadkari - have been included in Modi's Cabinet. The BJP should think of projecting either of them or some other popular leader as its candidate for the post of the chief minister of Maharashtra in the forthcoming state elections. The Congress, Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena are likely to field Prithviraj Chavan, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, respectively, as their candidates for the post.
