The Western nations are well-advised to ask themselves why they are relentlessly targeted by radical zealots rooted in extreme Islam. At least now, following the Brussels bombings, they have to realise the importance of identifying and tackling the causes of the copycat attacks in Europe with alarming regularity. It is a plain fact that the West's interference in the internal affairs of the predominantly Muslim countries is the single most important factor in the radicalisation of the youth, and it bolsters the view that there is indeed a clash of civilisations.
The European Muslim youth, natives and immigrants alike, feel a sense of alienation and develop a predisposition towards jihadist sentiments due to lack of integration, marginalisation and unemployment. Domestically, segregation is no way to fight radical extremism; a broader vision and inclusive strategies need to be adopted to give all people a sense of self-worth, citizenship and belonging to their countries, irrespective of race or religion.
