Apropos the edit “Keep Mr Trivedi’s reforms” (March 20), I agree with your suggestion that the Trinamool Congress should let the government proceed with reforms initiated in the Railway Budget. But this may be wishful thinking because if Mamata Banerjee didn’t have a problem with reforms suggested by Dinesh Trivedi, she would not have sought his removal from the Cabinet in the first place. So, how so ever good these reforms may be for the Railways, I am sure these will not be carried out by the new railway minister who will only act as Banerjee’s puppet. Trivedi had presented a bold Budget that was praised not only by the Congress, the Janata Dal (United) and certain other parties, but by railway unions too. He had presented changes in the system that are pivotal to the modernisation of the Railways. It is certain that railway unions will protest in case the increase in passenger fares is rolled back under pressure from Banerjee. And sure enough the Railways, too, might meet the same fate as Air India.
