Amrit Amirapu & Arvind Subramanian's article "Manufacturing futures" (May 9), rightly points to the very low share of manufacturing in the Indian gross domestic product, which needs improvement to create jobs for the one million that cascade each year into the employment market. Without that, the "demographic dividend" will turn to ash. But the low figure of 10.7 per cent share in gross domestic product cited refers only to the "registered" manufacturing sector. Besides the unreliability of Indian statistics, doesn't the reality of a large informal, un-registered sector substantially change the numbers?
