The decision of the Orissa High Court “to set aside the state government’s recommendation for providing prospecting licence to the company (Posco) for Khandadhar iron ore mines in Sundergarh district” (July 15) is a big blow to the Posco project, especially at a time when the company came up with an attractive compensation and rehabilitation scheme.

Whether the government goes for an appeal or not, it points to the confusion in our mining policy, often leading to corruption. The Centre should bring in a new policy taking into account all important aspects, such as granting licences, rehabilitation issues, etc., without further delay.
