Regarding Vedanta Resources’ bid to mine the Niyamgiri Hills, Kunal Bose (“Infra hurdles and growth needs”, 20 September) asks an important question: Why should the company be stopped to take out bauxite from there if it is ready to resettle the displaced people? There is a simple answer to this: because mining the Niyamgiri Hills would be a direct breach of the Constitution, the Forest Rights Act and India’s obligations under international law. Relocating or imposing the mine on the Dongria Kondh tribe would have destroyed them, as the government thankfully recognised.
