Letters: Misplaced priority

Business Standard New Delhi
One wonders whether investing billions of dollars to start a bullet train between Ahmedabad and Mumbai should be a priority for Indian Railways, given that there is greater need for upgrading technology to improve operations as well as safety standards. Even as thousands of unmanned railway crossings often lead to accidents, our obsession with accelerating speed to benefit a privileged few exposes a pro-rich bias in public policy.

Why are policy-makers not taking measures to add more coaches to trains, particularly those in Mumbai and Kolkata? The Prime Minister would do well to direct the railway minister to improve the services of long-distance trains. Ramshackle coaches need to be replaced instead of being repaired.
