Apropos the editorial "Pointing fingers" (November 14), the tragedy of our democracy is that it is dominated by politicians who are accustomed to treating the people and Constitutional institutions with contempt. By saying that it was a "myth" that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was "the Congress Bureau of Investigation" or a "caged parrot", Finance Minister P Chidambaram has not only questioned the wisdom of the people but also the sense of judgment of the highest court of the land. It is no secret that the Congress persistently misused the CBI. Ironically, the CBI is also required to investigate cases of corruption against the same government that controls it. Although the investigations into the 2G spectrum case and coal block allocations were being directly monitored by the Supreme Court, government officials still called for CBI's investigation reports and tampered with them. Instead of asking the Comptroller and Auditor General and the CBI to ignore the government's wrongdoing, the prime minister and the finance minister should keep a check on the government's functioning. They should stop blaming constitutional institutions and free CBI from government control.
