This refers to A K Bhattacharya's column "Jaitley's 16,173 word balancing act" (Raisina Hill, July 14). The absence of "disinvestment" from Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's Budget speech may be deliberate to avoid shouting from the Opposition benches. It is no surprise that the Budget had an imprint of Narendra Modi's ideas as espoused by him in his many election rallies. So the disinvestment of Rs 63,000 crore to mobilise resources also could not be without the wishes of the prime minister. As the writer rightly says about the "Gujarat Model" of development, it is the sick or inefficient public sector undertakings (PSUs) that Modi wanted to be turned around, while being led by professional managers. But the disinvestment of Rs 63,000 crore is of the profit-making, well-run PSUs, where the government's stake will be reduced by selling shares.
