The government’s decision to delay the introduction of GM seeds is not in the right direction. Given the rapid growth of population and shrinking cultivable land, there is a need for a second green revolution. This can only be brought about by introducing GM crops. Genetic engineering can help raise crop yield. GM crops are resistant to drought, water-logging, soil acidity, salinity and extreme temperatures and can thus help make farming sustainable. Moreover, these also help in restoring the productivity of degraded land.
The use of GM seeds is picking up throughout the world. China is reported to have the second-largest biotechnology research capacity after the US. Several nations around the world have used GM varieties to their benefit. However, one cannot ignore the need to adopt testing and safety protocols to address environmental issues too.
