What our politicians have not been able to do, television has done! “North or South, TV viewers speak one language” (November 30) shows that increasingly even viewers in the southern states are watching national channels — the number has doubled from 7 per cent in 2005 to 14 per cent in 2009. More important, most are watching the same kind of programmes — soap operas and more reality shows. The difference, of course, is in the kind of soaps that the two audiences enjoy. While the north Indian audiences enjoy weepy soaps, the south Indian audiences prefer cause-based ones with strong characters according to Vanita Kohli-Khandekar.
