Business Standard New Delhi

In the melee of national issues and stretched work schedule, the health of the country’s chief executive has almost been forgotten and neglected.

The successful conduct of surgery on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is good news for the whole nation. All doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi and the Asian Heart Institute in Mumbai should be congratulated for this successful endeavour.

In the context of the enormity of the surgery on him, Singh would take another two weeks to get back to his official duties. In any case, the PM’s health should not be something that holds the nation back. Therefore, it is important to have a permanent deputy PM so that there is no hindrance in the working of the system.
