This refers to the Q&A "We want 250 obsolete laws to be repealed" with A P Shah, chairman of the Law Commission of India (October 13). It vividly points out the need to repeal obsolete and old laws that are no longer used, dated and not related to the current juncture of time. The existence of such laws causes inordinate delays and confusion in the minds of the people who are dealing with such laws.
Such laws, which are hundreds in number, need to be scrapped immediately to allow for more clarity in the decision-making process. By doing so, we can formulate the laws relevant to the needs of current society. More importantly, there is a pressing need to restructure the tax and commercial laws to avoid ambiguity. Providing clear-cut provisions in these laws will avoid confusion in tax implications, which takes away investor confidence.
