This refers to the edit “Ideology and India” (July 12). The basic cause of the myriad problems that India faces today is not lack of ideology, but lack of motivational leadership that can mobilise the masses to purposive action. In fact, as the edit rightly points out, there are many ideologies that are routinely discussed and argued. But these debates hardly ever result in any concrete action. It is not without reason that Indians are called argumentative.

...and in the Congress party
You have rightly asserted that Salman Khurshid’s complaints would have been better directed at the Congress party’s current leader, Sonia Gandhi, or, indeed, at all his fellow Congressmen instead of Rahul Gandhi alone. Even as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is being held responsible for slowing growth, the huge fiscal deficit and policy paralysis, Congress leaders cannot escape the blame for the dismal state of affairs. The decision-making power on most matters of policy and governance has always been with Sonia Gandhi. Thus, the solution to Congress’ problems is not Rahul Gandhi but a capable leader out of the dynasty box. The UP Assembly elections amply demonstrated the end of the electorate’s fascination for the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty; and it’s time the Congress, too, moved on.
