This refers to M R Srinivasan’s article “Why Kudankulam nuke plant is viable” (October 9). The renewed struggle in Kudankulam was triggered by the prime minister’s hasty letter to the Tamil Nadu CM seeking her “help” for the “timely implementation” of the N-project. Given the perils inherent in nuclear power, it is difficult to accept the PM’s assurance that the reactors are safe and pose no threat to the lives and livelihoods of the local populace. The Fukushima nuclear meltdown shook people’s faith in the foolproof safety of nuclear plants. Moreover, nuclear reactors are silent killers since they emit high levels of radioactivity even while they are functioning “normally”. The higher incidence of weakening immune systems, cancer, nervous diseases and genetic defects and deformities in “nuclear terrains” attests to this fact. Safe alternatives to nuclear energy hold the key to the problem.
