Apropos the editorial "Update the rolls" (February 3), updating the electoral roll of the world's largest democracy is a Herculean task. Considering the cost, the medium of internet can be used for this purpose. This does not mean that we need to remove the human element completely, but let us keep it to the bare minimum. As mentioned in the editorial, "rapid economic growth" has been accompanied not only by massive urbanisation and migration but also the penetration of internet, especially in rural India.
The government did a tremendous job of seeding millions of Aadhaar numbers with banks, which was executed using the internet. We are at a juncture where the government is thinking of conducting online polls. So, the cumbersome task of enrolment and updating electoral data should also be done online.
