This refers to the editorial "End of the GoM era" (June 4). Isn't the Cabinet an empowered Group of Ministers (GoM)? Why was a subset of the Cabinet considered necessary in the first place? It was probably thought that a smaller GoMs would be able to lock themselves in a room and come out only after arriving at a consensus. Also, it would have had the advantage of division of labour. But, as it turned out, that was like living in a fool's paradise. Besides, with scores of GoMs and EGoMs, all having more or less the same ministers, the purpose of division of labour also wasn't served. The cause of expeditious decision-making will be better served if the Cabinet does its job, if necessary, by putting the options to vote and deciding on the basis of majority.
