Indrajit Gupta's column "Placements, statistics and damned lies" (Strategic Intent, January 23) brings out the harsh truth of the industry. These days students join various institutions, putting their career and finances at stake, in pursuit of their dreams of securing lucrative jobs. But they end up getting nothing. Moreover, companies hire candidates for the sales profile on target-based jobs. And if they fail to achieve their targets, companies don't hesitate to fire them. All this demotivates a lot of young minds who are capable of performing well.
Many institutions even cheat in the name of providing 100 per cent placement. Only 50 per cent of the students - sometimes even less - get placed. This, however, does not stop such institutions from creating a hype, and eyeing more admissions in the next session.
