This refers to the editorial "Doers all" (March 4). Political leaders are not economists. They achieve their targets by having their visions translated into practical plans by a competent team of experts. Rajiv Gandhi admitted to N A Palkhivala that he does not understand his points on economics and advised the latter to see Arun Singh. Indira Gandhi had a political strategy, and never an economic plan, according to which her advisors were asked to thrash out economic measures. The Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi sometimes shows impractical and hastily-pronounced ideas. It seems that being rational and reasonable does not appear to be a good strategy for winning elections.
