This refers to Mihir S Sharma’s column “Corruption as moral panic” (Policy Rules, November 7). The writer has made a valiant attempt to play down the scourge of corruption in India, arguing that the US and China are in a similar state. But he is overlooking a crucial fact that a few powerful companies and politicians fattening themselves through corruption appears starkly attention-grabbing in India with its large number of poor people providing a contrasting background. There, corruption seems to make rich even richer; but that’s about all. The average ordinary citizen is able to lead a comfortable life and hence, can afford to ignore the corruption in high places.
