This refers to the debate “Should electricity regulators promote competition?” (March 16). Given the state of the power sector in the country, the government is facing three challenges. One, rural electrification is a major issue. Many villages do not have proper electricity. Erratic power supply is another problem.
Two, there is an acute shortage of skilled personnel in the power sector. The government should take steps to recruit required manpower for the sector.
Three, the availability of resources to generate power is important. An appropriate supply of coal through timely import will help generate thermal power.
