Letters: Professor Lalu?

Business Standard New Delhi

The article ‘Lalu lessons’, February 23, does a good job of explaining how the Indian Railways effected a stunning turnaround under Lalu Prasad. What it does not explain, however, is the stunning turnaround in Prasad himself. This is a man who was accused of illegal amassing of wealth in the fodder scam, this is a man who has practiced and prospered from caste politics, this is a man who made his wife rule the state by proxy, this is a man who ensured Bihar remained in darkness for more than a decade ... why did he suddenly decide to change his stripes? Perhaps some of the credit must go to the government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who prevented him from running amok? To the system the British put in place in the Railways?

And the fact that the economy grew like it never did before must also have played a role in the fortunes of the Railways.
