This refers to the report “Maharashtra revives water transport project” (March 5). Though it is nice to note that this will be an environment-friendly mode of transport, it remains to be seen whether the project’s benefits will cover the bulk of the twin-cities’ working population or be limited to serving the elite. It needs to be pointed out that the state has dropped, without giving any reason, the rail portion of the road-cum-rail bridge from Nava Sheva to Sewri. That would have immensely reduced the travel time for hundreds of commuters between Panvel and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Also, it is odd that authorities are in a hurry to invite bids even as the consultants’ feasibility report is being finalised. The right course would have been to publish the feasibility report once it is finalised to elicit pubic comments and then take the appropriate decision.
