Mamata Banerjee has ordered that the Digha-Shalimar train stop at Howrah thrice a week and be renamed the Kandari Express, after the famous poet Nazrul Islam’s poem. She has also announced the slashing of rates of monthly local tickets for those who earn under Rs 500 a month.
Mamata Banerjee should focus on improvement and modernisation of the system before introducing new trains. Track renewal and conversion of single-tracks to double-tracks, electrification, modernisation of signalling and control systems and providing anti-accident devices should be taken up first.
