This refers to the editorial "On the right track" (June 23). Successive railway ministers with their populist Budget, with an eye for a pat on the back, allowed their coffers to bleed. Funds are an essential element to plan and execute all-round development. And this is only possible through hiking the passenger tariffs and freight rate charges. The Indian Railways - like any other government department - requires funds to replace old tracks, the primordial signal system and appointing more staff for efficient management. When the new government has plans to come out with a slew of changes, a revision in the railways passenger and freight rates seems inevitable and inescapable.
