Apropos Sanjaya Baru’s column “English and India” (August 15), I wish to draw attention to the fact that all those who celebrate the survival of English language in India and its benefits to the economy and professionals must acknowledge the singular contribution of E V Ramasamy (Periyar) — the man who fought against the imposition of Hindi and defended the teaching and use of English in India.
