Letters: Right to resign

Business Standard New Delhi
With reference to "Happiness at the Workplace" (April 22), the writer could add one more tell-tale indicator of happiness to his tool bag for measuring happiness - the right to leave the job. In public sector banks, officers aren't allowed to resign, except on medical grounds. Their applications for resignation are rejected summarily, even if there are no vigilance cases pending against them; if they are above 55 (retirement age is 60); and if they have genuine familial problems.

What can you say about "happiness at workplaces" in such an environment? The writer mentioned expressions like "Monday blues" and "Thank God it's Friday". Add one more: "I have only 99 days for my retirement", uttered gloatingly by the would-be senior citizens.
