The government’s ultimatum to the makers of BlackBerry, Research in Motion (RIM), that the firm should address security concerns by offering monitoring facilities in India, is a step in the right direction. The country is facing potential risks from technology that comes in handy for terrorists now.
The government has already restricted imports of telecom equipment from China because of possible spyware embedded in the equipment. The home ministry is expressing concerns over possible security threats posed by the high-end BlackBerry handset.
The Canada-based RIM has already set up servers in countries like the US and China to monitor its email and other data services. Considering the fact that India has a huge market base, the Canadian service provider should set up a monitoring server in India, thus complying with the security rules here.
