Letters: Separate power centres

Business Standard New Delhi
This refers to the editorial "End of the GoM era" (June 4). Although the official statement said the decision to abolish the Group of Ministers (GoMs) and Empowered GoMs (EGoMs) had been taken with a view to "expedite the process of decision making and usher in greater accountability in the system", there is a strong feeling that Narendra Modi is all set to get things under his control. Modi has done the right thing by abolishing these separate power centres. He is a man of action who brings transparency and accountability to governance. We need to admit that GoMs and EGoMs were partly responsible for the policy paralysis in the United Progressive Alliance-II government. The outgoing Cabinet had 21 GoMs and nine EGoMs - a total of 71 ministers. Even if each group had three members, it is clear that most ministers were members of multiple groups. In that case, what was the need to have individual ministries?
