Letters: Sorry attitude

Business Standard New Delhi

This refers to the edit “Just say sorry” (September 19). The suggestion to say “sorry” for 2002 riots is least likely to end Narendra Modi’s problems and bring a reconciliation in Gujarat. Modi’s adversaries in politics, the intelligentsia and the media would term his apology as his confession of guilt. Over the past nine years, this tribe has not only been using the riots to demonise Modi, but also to scratch and keep the wounds of the Muslim community fresh. Otherwise what was the purpose of TV channels playing and replaying the riots’ footage on the day when Modi began his fast? Is it not their responsibility, too, to pave way for a reconciliation in Gujarat?
