Finally the government has moved on removing the stranglehold politicians have on sports in India. Even the time limit of 12 years now put is too high. There has to be some known criterion to head such bodies and the voting has to be fair and transparent. Right now, this is not the case, as Neha Chowdhry (“The games politicians play”, May 1) has pointed out. Even in a body set up by the Indian Olympic Association, Chowdhry has said, the election was not above board — a sports ministry affidavit has been quoted to this effect in the article. Association heads must have quantifiable targets. In fact, as you have pointed out (“A suitable scapegoat”, April 27), Lalit Modi probably did more for Indian cricket than BCCI did since IPL allowed dozens of youngsters to showcase their talent and develop this further by playing with the best in India and world cricket.
