And so the strike at Maruti has led to a settlement in favour of the management. It is important that management must win. It makes everyone secure. Even as the workers during this extended period felt threatened, lost wages, got suspended and dismissed, the management went about ramping up production by hiring new workers, transferring staff from their Gurgaon plant.
When the news of exploitation of illegal immigrant labour by Wal Mart reached consumers, they shied away from shopping at their outlets, leading the retailer to correct its policies and image. Or when a former Miss Universe alleged harassment by the marketing head of a leading multinational corporation, it led to immediate rapprochement fearing a backlash from consumers.
But that’s in an evolved society. Over here things are still quite different.
