Letters: Tatas too?

Business Standard New Delhi

The income tax notice to the Tatas on alleged ‘round-tripping’ or ‘treaty-shopping’ (Tata Industries gets I-T demand on round-tripping’, April 8) is shocking, but the implications go far beyond this. It is well known that several companies try to route their investments through tax-havens to try and avoid paying taxes. So it does seem unethical that corporate groups like the Tatas would also do the same thing.

But put yourself in Ratan Tata’s shoes for a moment. If other business groups do this, and this enables them to show higher profits and higher growth, shouldn’t Tata do the same thing?
