I would like to bring to the finance minister’s notice a difficulty faced by senior citizens in India. The best way to explain the issue is to state my case. Owing to my advanced age (76) and need for treatment for my pulmonary condition, I have moved to live close to my daughter’s residence in Bangalore, paying over 60 per cent of my pension towards rent. I receive rent from my house in Hyderabad. For tax purposes, I get a rebate of Rs 24,000 over a year towards rent receivable whereas the rent I pay is Rs 1.8 lakh. A fair way in such cases will be to tax excess, if any, of rent received over rent paid.
