Your edit “What the doctor ordered?” (July 11) aptly analysed the government’s proposal to offer free generic medicines through the public health system. Indeed, the scheme could benefit millions of people if we develop the required means and infrastructure to make it a success. However, it may be better to entrust the states with the responsibility of making it work on the ground. This will require setting up more public health centres, getting more doctors and para-medical staff and so on. That means the government will have to build or grant permission for more medical colleges, improve medical education, its management and so on. Moreover, we need to provide clean drinking water, improve sanitation and provide preventive health care education.
