Letters: The chairman's advice

Business Standard New Delhi
This refers to the editorial "Farewell the Chairman" (February 27). Ashok Gulati as chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Price, raised much hope. He may have done his job efficiently in advising crop policy, procurement, stock holding, trade policy, minimum support prices and so on, but failed to bring a stable price policy. Inflation remained high and exorbitant vegetable prices, especially of onion, were a big problem. He cannot be blamed unless the system is fixed. However, his advice to find a permanent solution should be taken seriously. The price stabilisation of perishable goods needs stocking facilities, free trade and more processing. Gulati suggested that the answer to the onion problem lies in processing it in dehydrated form, which increases its shelf life to two years and reduces storage space.
