Letters: The Coal India let-down

Image

Business Standard New Delhi
This refers to the editorial "Don't blame Coal India" (September 5). As the only major coal producer, Coal India Ltd (CIL) has miserably failed the country in discharging its responsibilities. Merely blaming delays in environment clearances cannot absolve it of its responsibility in honouring various fuel supply agreements. Moreover, frequent changes in its top management - the last managing director, an ex "babu", who jumped ship when things became too hot, opting for his parent cadre as principal secretary to the chief minister of Telangana, was replaced by another "babu" from Kerala with little experience of running a multi-crore industrial behemoth like CIL - is hardly the way to go.

No wonder the labour is up in arms, for instead of fighting various burning issues, the government has now opted to disinvest - not a popular move for those who see it as creeping privatisation
