Letters: The great Indian apathy

Arvind Subramanian’s article on inflation raised some pertinent questions (“India’s inflation mystery,” July 27). Perhaps the fatalist attitude of the people can explain why the Indian middle class has not made much noise over rising prices. However, one would disagree with the author’s logic that the consumer is less hurt because of the decline in private consumption of food. No matter what the statistics say, with milk retailing at '27 a litre and a slice of baked bread costing a rupee or more, food prices are hurting middle class consumers like never before.
