Business Standard New Delhi

The election for India’s next president has created considerable interest among political parties and citizens in general (“Speculation begins on Prez poll, as no alliance has enough votes,” April 24). Indeed, the president’s post should be occupied by someone who is well-educated and has a clean and corruption-free background. The candidate should be a visionary with leadership qualities and should preferably have a non-political background. He or she should be neither too young nor too old; in fact someone in his or her mid-sixties would be ideal. One name that comes to mind immediately is Narayana Murthy. He fulfils most of the qualities required to hold the office of president of India. His wife, Sudha Murthy, too, would be suitable as the First Lady. Mrs Murthy is highly educated, intelligent and has been involved in social work. India can benefit greatly from her involvement in working towards social upliftment, especially the betterment of women.
