This refers to Surinder Sud’s column “Retail chains can help farmers” (Farm view, November 28). Usually, a change in the status quo prompts opposition from people. When computers first came into the market, a number of people were against it. They feared it would generate unemployment because a computer could effectively do the work of 10 employees. Then, gradually, people started to accept computers and, now, we can’t imagine a world without them. It is the same case with foreign direct investment in retail. But instead of fearing it, we should note the benefits it could reap for farmers who are exploited by faulty policies and supply chain. And that FDI in retail will ultimately help farmers.
