Letters: Timing the exit

It is best to go, the old saying goes, when people ask why instead of when. And so it applies to BJP leader LK Advani. As Advani finally steps down, the party must surely be asking why it took Advani so long to step down, thereby causing enormous damage to the party. At a time when the party could have focussed on taking the government to task on various issues, it remained paralysed with its own internal matters. Even now, with Advani’s stepping down, the main issue has still not been settled, it has just been papered over.

Just a few weeks ago, when the name of the new BJP chief was announced, Sushma Swaraj went public to say he was the fifth or the sixth choice. The BJP is not a party that has come to terms with itself.
